There’s something I’ve noticed that gets under my skin.
Every time I get those little requests on LinkedIn to give input on leadership—especially when it comes to managing teams—I see the same thing: people sharing tactics. Strategy after strategy. Hacks and frameworks. And while all of that has its place, my response always breaks from the norm.
Because for me, leadership isn’t a tactic.
Leadership is a state of being.
Sure, tactics might make you more effective—but if you’re not a leader on the inside, your team will sniff that out in a heartbeat.
This applies everywhere—in the office and at home.
Just because you have the highest rank doesn’t mean you’re the leader. It just means you’re the boss.
Leadership is about presence, not position. When you lead from the inside out, you earn something that can’t be demanded: respect. And that kind of respect compels people to follow you by choice, not by force.
And yes, I’ve heard all the complaints about the younger generation—how they don’t want to work, how they’re too soft, too distracted. But have you ever considered that maybe… they just don’t want to follow you?
I’ve led teams filled with millennials in corporate settings. Many of them have told me I changed their lives—not just professionally, but personally.
Why?
Because I saw them. I led people—not just employees, not just direct reports. I treated them like whole, unique, human beings.
The old model of robotic compliance is dead.
These newer generations want leaders who connect, who care, who show up as real. They don’t follow titles. They follow people.
A true leader:
• Connects on a personal level
• Earns trust
• Is empathetic
• Shows vulnerability
• Protects those they lead
• Sets the standard—not just by words, but by being the example
And if you’re showing up as that kind of leader in the office, I applaud you.
But how about at home?
Are you leading your family—or just managing it?
Are you making real connections, showing vulnerability, earning trust, setting the tone?
True leadership begins inside.
It’s a reflection of who you are—not just what you do. Leaders want the best for their people and deliver results. Managers? They just chase outcomes.
And here’s the catch: when you’re under stress, it’s easy to slip into manager mode.
But that’s exactly why self-mastery matters. You can’t lead others until you’ve learned to lead yourself.
This is one of the reasons why I build the Men of Alignment community.
This is where we do the real work. No masks. No posturing. Just a group of men committed to leading with integrity, love, and authenticity—starting from within.
Because when you master yourself, you master your world.
